Today was the first field trip for the interns, and I was invited to tag along! We rode in style in a limo party bus up the street to Rochester Precision Optics (RPO). RPO was once the optics division of Kodak until it split off a few years ago. The company is hugely successful, has been been ranking very high (top 10) on the Rochester Top 100, and is currently in the midst of a huge expansion. We got to tour the manufacturing facilities, where we saw lenses of various materials being ground, polished, coated, and tested. We also had to put on smocks to enter a clean room to watch precision glass molding, where glass is heated and molded as opposed to ground and polished. RPO is one of only 3 companies in the US capable of this process. It was really cool! RPO has a really nice facility and appears to have a lot of employee perks. It would be a great place to work and they are actively searching for young imaging scientists!
After the tour we went over to Pizza Hut for their lunch buffet - what a treat! Though I later regretted over-stuffing myself... but now that I'm over the stomach ache, I don't regret it anymore.
